It isn’t uncommon for the toad to die in the process, and conservationists warn that soaring demand has already put a strain on the amphibian. Although the toad’s substance is a powerful hallucinogen, only a small amount is required to achieve significant effects. The rest is metabolized to other chemicals, including bufotenine and sylvaline, which are also thought to play a role in the experience. However, 5-MeO DMT is the most prevalent component in the toad’s secretion and arguably has the strongest psychoactive properties. Additional pharmacodynamic end points that were positively impacted by the treatment included increased libido, sense of connectedness, and empathy.
